Engineering Manager Renewables Protection and Automation

Job Purpose: The Engineering Manager will manage the Project Engineering section in the Protection and Automation division, including Project and Design Engineers.

Job Specifications:

• Minimum HND Electrical Engineering (HC).15 yrs experience in HV electrical field with minimum 10 yrs as a protection designer.
• Professional Engineering (Pr.Eng or Pr.Tech Eng).
• Preferably have 3 yrs Renewable Energies large projects experience.
• Understanding the Business Processes.
• Detailed understanding of design and operation of modern protection relay technology and substation automation and its application through to commissioning.
• Detailed understanding of design of primary electrical plant in transmission and distribution substations.
• Detailed understanding design and operation of substation control systems through to SCADA systems (Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition).A working knowledge of the civil and mechanical engineering aspects of substations and overhead power lines.
• In depth knowledge and understanding of discipline specific technology and technical skills (Protection / Metering / SCADA / DC Systems or Telecommunication).Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Computer Literacy:

• MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Project, Build Smart/Candy.
• Stakeholder Management:
• To ensure that stakeholders are always well informed and to establish a free flow of information.
• Assist Divisional Manager in Producing Protection and Automation Business plan.
• Conduct quarterly reviews for the Engineering division.
• Conduct quarterly reviews for the Engineering division Manage and maintain relationships through regular contact with Senior Management Team, Substations, Project Accountant, Fellow Project Engineers, Tender Administrators, Site Staff, Design Office, Automation, Customers and Suppliers.

Engineering Projects:

• To ensure that engineering projects in the Protection & Automation Division is managed in terms of quality, productivity, effectiveness, success, profitability and timelines based on set targets.
• Pro-actively identify areas of improvement in Engineering practices and make recommendations to the business.
• Responsible for managing the engineering performance against expected performance outcomes.
• Achieve Engineering profitability as per targets set.
• Accountable for all contract drawings/designs.
• Delegate work to project and design engineers with goals and relevant project details and profitability.
• Do regular cost/benefit analysis of certain products i.e. SEL.
• Continuously update the Engineering & Production Schedule for the Division (process, dates, targets).
• Monitor performance of the Drawing Office.
• Ensure Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) is done as per schedule and standards.
• Monitor Project Management Performance.

Engineering Projects:

• To ensure that engineering projects in the Protection & Automation Division is managed in terms of quality, productivity, effectiveness, success, profitability and timelines based on set targets.
• Conduct Technical Risk Management and communicate risks to relevant stakeholders.
• Identify areas of improvement in Engineering practices, and pro-actively make recommendations to the business.

Risk Management:

• To ensure SHEQ compliance and sufficient cover.
• Identify and keep track of all Engineering related Governance and Compliance issues.
• Monitor and enforce quality and safety in accordance with company policy.

Indirect marketing:

• To ensure that the company’s effectiveness, capability and expertise is reflected when dealing when external customers and potential clients.
• Support to Business Development through Marketing.
• Be knowledgeable about the company successes, expertise and strategy.

Leadership:

• To ensure that Employees are well managed.
• Monitor the wellbeing of staff, facilities etc.
• Attract, develop and retain top Talent.
• Ensure regular Performance discussions with Staff.

• Monitor customer satisfaction / dissatisfaction with service delivery through liaison.

Cost effectiveness:

• To manage division’s expenses by involving employees to contribute towards the financial health of the company.

Eliminate unnecessary expenses:

• Ensure operating costs are in balance with expected outcome thereof.
• Keep waste to absolute minimum.
• Implement cost saving initiatives as and where possible and applicable.

Financial Management:

• To ensure that the project budgets for Engineering are aligned to the company strategy and managed to provide for the achievement of its goals and objectives.
• Provide input towards budget process through liaison with Divisional Manager.
• Provide input towards cash flow forecasts monthly.
• Manage the budget towards achievement of monthly targets.
• Ensure costing remains relevant to Market.
• Monitor and approve orders placed by Engineering staff.
• Recommend and approve increases for design engineers.

Performance Management:

• To establish an acceptable standard of work throughout the organisation and that leadership is lived daily.
