Senior Solutions Engineer Renewables. The Senior Solutions Engineer is located in Cape Town and reports to the Managing Director Africa, with technical reporting line to the VP of Engineering in Australia.

This is a full-time role and commences from August with a 6 month probation period. The remuneration comprises of base salary, bonuses related to company performance and the opportunity for equity options.

You will be expected to travel regularly to destinations including HQ (USA), operating countries and other relevant locations including: Africa, Australia Pacific, Philippines, Caribbean and USA. You are required to hold a current driver’s license. The Senior Solutions Engineer supports the sales, development and construction of projects in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa, primarily focused in Southern Africa and West Africa.

You will need to have experience in project design, development and construction of renewable and thermal power generation systems. Possess a passion for identifying bespoke power solutions for serving low carbon intensity electricity to industrial sector clients. Also have a proven track record in project management and delivery.

The Senior Solutions Engineer has responsibility for technical input to projects sales and development in the Africa market value chain. The role will have responsibility over devising a microgrid solution and operational philosophy for a project during its development (bidding, liaising with contractors), to Financial Close (construction).

Experience:

The Senior Solutions Engineer needs to have the following experience in renewable power generation:

• Concept and preliminary design, constructing and commissioning, integration of generating equipment into brownfield thermal installations.
• Practical demonstrated/implemented knowledge of civil designs, mechanical designs, electrical and control designs.
• Practical industry experience in project economic feasibility and project capital cost estimation providing input to company cost estimators on electrical plant, civil and mechanical indicative costs, project value engineering, negotiations with contractors and suppliers.
• Practical industry experience in project management in design package delivery project management, time scheduling, engineering team tasking.

Role description:

Senior Solutions Engineer who will be responsible for the following key functions:

• Supporting the conceptual design and specification of projects, with a focus on microgrid hybrid systems, including solar photovoltaic, wind, battery storage, thermal generation (diesel, gas, HFO) in the target markets.
• Supervising technical studies (such as short-circuit, dynamic power system modelling) and preliminary designs in cooperation with local engineering companies.
• Performing the technical design review of EPC detailed designs, schedules and capital estimates.
• Technical support of supervision of EPC contractors during project delivery.
• Supporting engineering due diligence activities on existing assets, where necessary.
• Sharing expertise and insight with other engineers within the business.
• Developing project management plans, risk assessments, hazard identifications, budget estimates, project schedules and design briefs to effectively manage delivery activities in accordance with project management best practice.

Within key functions, the Senior Solutions Engineer is expected to:

• Conduct client facility site visits and understand specific needs for electrical and/or thermal energy.
• Assist business development and sales teams with project identification, assessment and concept design, by providing sound advice on project technical issues and assistance with proposal and bid development relevant to projects.
• Undertake technical analysis during project development to evaluate a prospective project; work with operations and finance groups to develop solutions appropriate to client needs.
• Be primary advisor on the selection of appropriate technologies and lead relationships with key partners and suppliers in the target market.
• Liaise with the local EPC companies, technology providers, and consulting firms with the goal of producing fit-for-purpose designs.
• Ensure smooth design integration of new assets with the existing client facilities.
• Perform scoping and management of third-party engineers for specialist engineering studies where appropriate.
• Provide engineering and broader microgrid technical input to business cases, specifications, tendering and procurement processes, and continuing through to review and approval of detailed design.
• Provide technical support to supervise EPC or local contractor construction of projects in the target market and serve as primary engineering sign-off approver.
• Support due diligence investigations of existing client sites for both internal and third party projects the company might be looking to acquire.
• Develop detailed project management plans for the delivery of key work packets during the lead development and front end engineering and design through to energy service agreement contracting.
• Contribute to internal team achievements through collaboration.
• Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as all requirements of the relevant Workplace Health and Safety Act.

Maintain strict confidentiality of all company data and technical information Role relationships:

The company is a global business operating within several world markets through regional offices. In each market, a local Managing Director leads the team and provides regional line management. On the other hand, Principal Engineers have global roles and provide technical guidance across all markets where the company operates.

The role of the Senior Solutions Engineer is one of the engineering roles in the Africa business and does not have direct reports. Additionally, as a global business, it is expected for the Senior Solutions Engineer to support similar project sales and development activity in other markets including Australia Pacific, Philippines, Caribbean, should the circumstances require it.

Knowledge and skills:

The Solutions Engineer should possess the following knowledge. core technical knowledge of electrical generation systems such as:

• Microgrids and Hybrid power generation, Diesel/Gas/HFO generation, Solar photovoltaic / wind systems; and Battery storage systems / technology.
• Electrical engineering knowledge of generating systems, high voltage switchgear and breaking equipment, low/medium voltage power equipment (cabling, transformers, switching equipment) and control/protection equipment.
• Knowledge of design processes, standards and industry rules and regulations.
• General IT knowledge of design software, development software, internet software, project management software, spreadsheet software and word processing software.
• General knowledge of project management and techniques for development planning and project analysis.

The Senior Solutions Engineer should also possess the following skills:
