Place of work: Cape Town (preferred but negotiable). This role may require international travel across the continent.

Salary package: R750-R850 with additional benefits including performance based annual bonus and eligible for Employee Share Option Plan.

Languages: Ability to speak French and/or Portuguese is considered highly beneficial.

Head of Storage Solar PV and BESS. We are seeking an experienced candidate within the containerised solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) sector with operational experience designing, commissioning, servicing turnkey solar PV generation systems across sub-Saharan Africa.

The company tailors containerised systems that are perfectly suited for emerging markets and the needs of clean, turnkey and distributed renewable energy (DRE). The production system and assembly facility are geared for small-scale, once-off and bespoke projects as well as large-scale rollouts of mini-grids alike.

Headquartered in Cape Town, the team focuses on business development across sub-Saharan Africa with current business activities in numerous Sub-Saharan countries. With growing activities, a good presence on the African continent, an expanding network of partners and the implementation of new projects, the company is set to grow exponentially over the next few years with a strong focus on BESS opportunities.

Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to work in energy access, and support growth and strategic market positioning as a leading supplier of fully integrated, turn-key, plug and play containerized power systems as well as BESS across the continent to capture and grow both off grid/mini-grids and C&I opportunities.

The preferred candidate will have the following responsibilities:

• Lead technical sales which requires a thorough understanding of the client requirements, to propose the optimal technical system based on price and technical performance.
• Work closely with the project delivery team (i.e. engineering and manufacturing sub-contractors) to maintain a high level of cost efficiency, speed and quality.
• Responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing new and/or improved products and designs which could improve performance, reduce cost, and improve quality, specifically on storage.
• Work with the rest of the engineering and marketing team to execute new product sales/campaigns in multiple market segments.
• Continuously support the optimisation of the internal technical sales process. This requires thorough understanding of (i) in-house sales tools, (ii) keeping up to date with latest technology and equipment trends, and (iii) develop a good relationship with current and possible future equipment suppliers and prices.
• Refine the current product offering in battery energy storage based on the product range i.e., HV and LV, as well as cabinet solutions.
• Continuously undertake research and competitor analysis that would improve the equipment and service offerings.
• Work closely with the rest of the engineering team (i.e. technical sales, production, FAT, installation and commissioning), and where required support work either at the workshop or on site.
• Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience i.e. mentor junior application engineering team, currently comprising of a proposal engineer and junior electrical engineer.
• Work closely with the business development manager to support the sales process, and engagements with potential clients.
• Keep up with latest market and technology trends and share those within the team.

Requirements:

• Master’s Degree in Electrical, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering.
• At least 5 years’ experience working in the renewable energy sector in Africa (either design, equipment manufacturing or product development), most specifically solar PV and energy storage, battery management systems.
• Experience in stand-alone and hybrid energy storage systems and technology.
• Understanding of energy storage applications, revenue streams and current market trends.
• Electrical energy storage technology, engineering and consultancy from residential to utility scale.
• Although not required, experience in installation, operation and maintenance of solar systems, successfully overseeing factory acceptance tests would be an advantage.
• CAD software – use computer-aided design software on a daily basis.
• Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
• Analytically inclined self-motivated and driven.
• Excellent relationship-building skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• MS Office proficient.
• Project management concepts – from scheduling to meeting deadlines, electrical design engineers should be able to adhere to project management guidelines and processes.
• Electrical codes – knowledge of electrical codes is important in the design and manufacture of electrical system.
• Electrical energy storage technology, engineering and consultancy from residential to utility scale.
• Data analytics with relation to battery system testing and operation.
• Capability to model or simulate energy storage operations.
