Development Project Manager Renewable Energy

One of South Africa’s most successful utility-scale renewable energy developers seeks a motivated Development Project Manager Renewable Energy. In this role you will work closely with an agile team of experienced and committed people to grow the company’s development pipeline of utility-scale renewable energy projects (wind, solar PV, hydro) in South Africa and neighboring countries.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

The core focus of the role will be to assist and/or manage a range of environmental, land and permitting activities throughout the project development lifecycle from project inception, through to financial close and start of construction, including:

• Initial site screening, constraints analysis and site feasibility assessments;
• Interface with team members and technical consultants on resource, energy and grid connection considerations
• Interact and negotiate with new landowners in prospecting or land acquisition processes
• Project manage EIA process and related permitting processes;
• Ensure legal compliance with environmental, permitting and related legislation;
• Secure all land & environmental authorisations, consents and approvals required to develop and construct renewable energy facilities and associated grid connection infrastructure;
• Project manage environmental and land aspects of due diligence and financial close processes;
• Manage land owner relationships;
• Manage engagements with key stakeholders;
• Interface with the technical and business development teams throughout the project development process;
• In time, take full accountability for the environmental and land workstreams in the project development lifecycle.
• There is scope for growth in this role, with the ability to take on additional responsibilities in the technical, commercial, legal and business development workstreams, with a view to growing into a well-rounded project development manager (depending on the candidate’s interests and aptitudes)

Job Specification:

• South African citizen.
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
• Honours or Masters degree a plus;
• At least 5+ years’ appropriate experience in environmental management and/or renewable energy development;
• Previous experience or training in o    South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) processes (bidding & financial close) strongly preferred.
• Proven experience in managing EIA processes
• Experience in (or understanding of) permitting processes relating to water use, rezoning, agriculture (SALA), civil aviation and MPRDA Section 53 approvals
• Experience in negotiating and securing land tenure a strong bonus;
• Strong knowledge and understanding of South African environmental and related legislation, as pertains to renewable energy developments;
• Experience and/or knowledge of environmental legislation in Namibia, Botswana or Eswatini a bonus;
• High level of attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong project management, planning and organization skills;
• Able to work effectively across multiple projects and prioritise accordingly;
• Self-motivator but team player
• Good understanding or appreciation for interdisciplinary nature of renewable energy development process and the enviro-technical-commercial interface
• Proficient in Afrikaans and/or another official language in South Africa strongly preferred;
• Must be available to travel regularly to sites around South African and Southern Africa
• Passionate about contributing to the growth of renewable energy in South Africa;
