Chief Executive Officer Solar PV. On behalf of The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association, Shaw Energy Recruitment Ltd is managing the search & recruitment campaign for SAPVIA’s next Chief Executive Officer.
Although strong preference will be given to B-BBEE female applicants, the position is open to all suitably qualified candidates that are currently in South Africa with prior Senior Executive and Solar PV sector experience.
This full-time permanent position is for immediate hire and requires that you are a dynamic, mission-driven leader who is passionate about leading hands-on operations and fostering growth, and implementing programmes that will develop the South African solar energy industry.

As the preferred candidate, you will have a track record of success in and a strong reputation in the Solar PV sector and proven gravitas with key industry stakeholders including, and especially, government.
SAPVIA is a member-led organisation formed with the express purpose of delivering a solar PV powered future for South Africa.

Officially launched in 2010, SAPVIA currently has 570 members.
SAPVIA’s mission is to grow Solar PV as the electricity generation technology of choice in South Africa and the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, in support of socio-economic development, and in service of the membership. Since inception SAPVIA has been at the forefront in driving a positive enabling environment for the adoption of solar PV.

Chief Executive OfficerPosition Overview: SAPVIA seeks a mission-driven and experienced business leader with experience in the Solar PV industry, skilled in successfully executing strategic plans and empowering and motivating high performing staff.
The CEO will report to the Management Committee of SAPVIA which consists of 10 (ten) non-executive commissioners as appointed by Members of SAPVIA at the Annual General Meeting.  The CEO will be an executive, non-voting, member of the Management Committee of SAPVIA, and have overall management responsibility for growing an impactful non-profit Association increasing the annual budget from R4 to R10 million and expanding the team from the current 3 to 10+ employees within the coming 3-to-5 year period as the solar PV and broader Renewable Energy sectors grow significantly – and therefore so too the prominence of SAPVIA.
Position Responsibilities:

• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Association and ensure its overall successful long-term operations.
• Assure that the Association makes consistent and timely progress in achieving its mission and targeted solar industry impact.
• Provide leadership in developing programs, organisational, and financial plans and execute policies authorised by the Management Committee.
• Plan, actively manage, and oversee the Association’s operations, programs and fundraising while ensuring the Association’s financial sustainability.
• Provide strong and effective leadership in the interface between the Association’s staff, who drive the operations and programmes, and the Management Committee, which provides strategic inputs.
• Oversee and report on the Association’s results to the Management Committee.
• Lead, manage, and guide the organization to attain continued growth, success, and optimal mission impact for solar energy programs and services.
• Lead and manage the interfaces between Association and the Solar PV community, members, industry and extended stakeholders.
• Serve as the Association’s representative in engagement with members, the government, the public and other (internal and external) stakeholders.
• Effectively represent the Association and promote the industry’s positive contribution to ensure adequate industry representation and public acceptance and adoption.
• Maintain relations with national policy makers, other industry bodies and national stakeholders, including Eskom, key Government Departments (specifically Department of Minerals Resources and Energy, Department of Trade Industry and Competition, Department of Employment and Labour, National Treasury), the IPP Office, National Energy Regulator of South Africa and other industry associations (including SAWEA, BUSA, BLSA).Provide thoughtful executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides the Association’s mission as defined by the Management Committee.
• Foster a collaborative working environment, encourage professional development, and champion accountability amongst staff.
• Attend all Management Committee meetings and provide reports and updates on staff as well as all current work, project timelines, and project and organizational progress Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Management Committee and staff.
• Communicate effectively with the Management Committee by providing information necessary to continually function properly and make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner.
• Organize, motivate, and mentor internal team leaders to strategically grow the Association’s impact, programs, and fundraising, and to effectively fulfil its important mission.
• Apply innovative thinking and performance measurements to analyse and support strategic decision-making.
• Continually foster a culture that encourages collaboration between all internal and external stakeholders and recognises positive contributions, including effective collaboration between the Management Committee and SAPVIA working groups and external working groups in which SAPVIA is represented.
• Contribute to the strategic plan and drive its implementation.
• Manage and motivate staff, overseeing processes such as hiring, separation, ongoing staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits.
• Inspire a business-oriented, professional, results-driven environment across the Association.
• Perform general management duties ensuring the successful operations of the Association.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

• The ideal candidate for this role embraces servant-leadership as well as a thoughtful approach to drive SAPVIA’s mission, develop and maintain strategic plans to maintain and grow SAPVIA’s impact in the sector and organizational leadership.
• The qualified candidate should bring:
• At least seven years of prior executive experience as a successful leader of a related and recognised non-profit organisation and/or for-profit organisation.
• Suitable tertiary qualifications.
• A proven track record of growing organisational capacity and programmatic impact.
• A strong passion for the solar industry and South Africa’s just energy transition.
• Proven abilities and experience in financial management and preparing and securing approval for annual budgets.
• Passion for creative program development and Association funding growth.
• Strategic fundraising experience.
• Capacity to excel at influencing and leading the Association towards positive growth.
• Capable of designing and directing strategies that enhance and support the Association’s operations and mission.
• Knowledge of how to foster an environment of accountability, healthy work relationships and partnerships, and inclusivity among Association’s staff to maintain a positive and collaborative work environment.
• Experience in creating and establishing clear, measurable business goals Outstanding communication skills and ability to work well with media, staff, and the community.
